About Deborah
Deborah is a faith-filled and grace-filled believer in the Spirit of the Divine who knows that Spirit cannot be boxed in or limited. She is a Roman Catholic with a distinct stance of openness and awareness of the world around her that lives outside of her faith tradition. Deborah became very aware of the spiritual nature of her being at an early age.
SpiritGod continues to call her through various avenues and ways of listening to people from all walks of life. These listening avenues were to be found not only in the hallowed halls of the houses of God but also in supermarkets, shopping centers, and gas stations where people needed to be heard by someone, and Spirit would tell them: Go, speak to her.
Deborah was trained through the Ministry Formation program of the Archdiocese of Louisville, a two-year program of ministry education. It was during one of these classes that she learned about the art of spiritual direction from Steve Thieneman (one of the cofounders of Sycamore Spirituality Center) and his reflections of a Zen Garden.
It was during Steve’s presentation that she realized the true calling she had from SpiritGod: to be a spiritual director. After spending the summer break in a spiritual direction group, she discerned the call to continue and be fully trained as a spiritual director through the Archdiocese of Louisville. Deborah received her training from Fr. Jim Keegan, SJ; Linda Reynolds; and Ginny Schaeffer. (Linda and Ginny are also cofounders of Sycamore Spirituality Center.) Upon graduating in 2001, she began her practice of welcoming people to listen to the soft whisper of SpiritGod within themselves.
In 1999 she became a Reiki energy worker, going on to achieve two master levels in the art. Deborah once again listened to SpiritGod, recognizing and acknowledging the gift of second sight and energy that she has always had since childhood.
In 2010 she joined Sycamore Spirituality Center, Inc., as a facilitator and teacher. Sycamore developed a three-year formation program to help people become more contemplative in their everyday lives in year one, with years two and three teaching them the art and skills of listening to others as a spiritual director.
In 2011 Deborah began serving on the campus of the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary as a spiritual director, meeting students wherever they are in their life journeys. She still maintains relationships with several students who have graduated from this seminary.
Deborah tends her own ministry needs by being in supervision and spiritual direction herself, which helps her to direct others with greater clarity and grow in contemplation for herself.
She has led retreats for men’s and women’s groups as well as parish councils, teaching facility and committee members who are looking to spend time away from their ordinary lives to encounter the extraordinary nature of SpiritGod.
